You are here:Home/Blog/Public/Iowa Forecast: Strong winds to impact the state over the weekend.
Strong winds are expected to hit Iowa over the weekend followed by precipitation chances next week so read on for the details…
A strong storm system is expected to work across the Rockies and into the northern plains late this week and over the weekend. This will put Iowa in the section for strong winds both Saturday and Sunday. We will start to see an increase in the wind today with a category 1 on the wind scale…meaning trees may sway some but the most intense wind is still yet to come. By Saturday we will start to reach a level 2 as gusts become somewhat intense at times. The stronger winds will hit on Sunday where a level 3 will likely be reached and it’s possible that even localized level 4 is felt across some areas during the day Sunday.
Wind Model Scale –
5. Slight damage occurs to buildings, shingles are blown off of roofs. HIGH WIND WARNING CRITERIA – High Profile Vehicle Roll-Over Possible if weight is not corrected. (60+MPH)
4. Twigs and small branches are broken from trees, walking is difficult. (50-60 MPH)
3. Large trees sway, becoming difficult to walk. WIND ADVISORY CRITERIA (40-50 MPH)
2. Large tree branches move, telephone wires begin to “whistle”, umbrellas are difficult to keep under control. (30-40 MPH)
1. Small trees sway. (20-30 MPH)
Now let’s talk about early next week. As I mentioned above, we will have a strong storm system working through the interior northwest and eventually into the northern plains which will give Iowa strong winds over the weekend and then some precipitation by early next week. Right now we continue to watch things closely as we have for the past several days and we still are seeing various differences which means the confidence on this part of the forecast is low to a point. What I do know as of right now is that Monday looks to be a fairly rainy day statewide. What we are watching is going to be for the possibly of a wintry mix on Tuesday. That risk right now is over northwest Iowa but I still think we have time for more changes before we reach Monday so make sure to check back often as we continue to update.
